Schwemmer Seminar

Last Monday, junior Mike Schwemmer invited interested students to a world religion club which will meet Thursdays at breakfast to discuss the teachings of major faiths.

A spiritual seeker in his own right, Schwemmer has journeyed through his fair share of religions. For instance, he said that he “spent a few years as a Christian agnostic.”

After this skepticism, Schwemmer tried a more ancient religion. But finally, he said, , “Mimetic desire led me back to Catholicism.”

Furthermore, as he shared, “I don’t see another religion that is as complete as Catholicism.”
The curriculum of his course will largely be designed around the desires of those in the group, but Schwemmer also plans on covering certain specific religions. Among the religions of emphasis is Islam because, Schwemmer believed, “Understanding Islam is one key to understanding current world events.”
As to any base left uncovered, Schwemmer speculated, “I don’t think I will cover Atheism,\" yet admitted that he had not really thought about that question.

An open invitation has been sent out, but Schwemmer especially welcomed “Anyone who has an experience with or has participated in a religion that we are discussing.”

A key theme for this course is an open mind. Schwemmer said, “There is a difference when you look out from within a religion compared to looking at a religion.”

One goal of this study is to put yourself in the seat of an adherent of the religion. All too often, people only come to a religion as a critic, and this approach is antithetical to Schwemmer's purpose of helping the group understand those religions.

An anonymous student opined of this new club, “I think it is partially pointless. I do not think it is going to change anyone’s opinion.”

Sophomore Matt Hernandez responded positively, however. “I think it’s cool. Learning about multiple religions sounds interesting.”

Rest assured that if you are not able to participate this year, Schwemmer plans on continuing the world religions study group next year. Mr. Knaack, who has \"Silence\" by Mother Theresa posted on his door, also plans on leading this group and he hopes to give a talk on Native American spiritual beliefs. The text for the course is “Exploring the Religions of Our World” by Nancy Clemmons.";"Last Monday, junior Mike Schwemmer invited interested students to a world religion club which will meet Thursdays at breakfast to discuss the teachings of major faiths.
