This woman was amazing. Her rich, fascinating life history provided endless opportunities for stories. I love that she describes how she is in an anti-writers block, a \"writer's surplus.\" I am lucky enough to feel the same way. There is so much in the world to write about that all I need is time to write. Plain and simple.
I am glad that I stepped up and took the time to ask her some personal questions about 'the personal.' Her understanding of the process of the revealing of oneself was helpful to give me the confidence to write about my life. I plan on creating a collection of stories of my life events, and maybe, one day, if a publisher finds the grouping interesting, the world will know my stories. I can only hope for this.
Nude Portrait was a spectacular piece for me. The blending of her present story of nude modeling with her troubled childhood was intensely real, vivid and emotional. I was torn back and forth between the curiosity I had for her present and the wonder about her history.
The ending of Nude Portrait was unsettling to me, although the ending came about from real life events. I feel that a different type of ending would have better left the reader thinking. I was just puzzled and felt that the ending didn't jive with the rest of the story. Although, rereading the ending after having written the previous sentence, maybe the ending is perfect as it is in the printed version. The thought was quite complex and I missed the subtlety the first time I read the end.
Of the authors we have had so far, this was one that I felt immediately close to in my ability to converse with her. Patricia Smith seemed far off, Susan Power was almost too warm, but Laura was a great balance of Patricia and Susan. She was professional in her distance and gentle in her personal proximity.
